At the initiative of Pierre Kracht, five other German designers traveled with him to Istanbul last autumn, to set up a hands-on design project in cooperation with Made in Sishane, an activist initiative, founded by the architect Asli Kiyak Ingin, that has set itself the aim to protect and support the unique local network of craftsmen in the Sishane – Galata district and city centre, under threat of being abolished by the local government threats and investors. The result is ISTANBUL’DAN, a project that tries to demonstrate the enormous potential of these flexible networks and how designers can contribute to the sustainable development of such neighborhoods.
The six participating designers were: Laura Jungmann, Dorothee Mainka, Pierre Kracht, Jonathan Radetz, Florian Saul and Michael Konstantin Wolke. During state of DESIGN, BERLIN 2016, ISTANBUL’DAN, will highlight the process and results of their two week trip to Istanbul, and together with Made in Şişhane, focusing on questions such as: How can a design process influence an environment? What is the potential of the creative and productive networks, neighborhoods, hubs? They will build a ‘communication device’, which will also provide the stage for their third ‘Hybrid Design Talk’.
Two of these Talks already took place earlier on, in Istanbul and Cologne, and respectively discussed the influence of craft neighborhoods on the future of design, and the meaning of bottom up strategies and productions in cities.
